Sophia Akuffo approved by parliament as new CJ

Chief Justice nominee, Justice Sophia Akuffo has been approved by consensus when parliament sat Monday, June 19, 2017 to consider the report of the Appointments Committee after vetting of the nominee.

Her appointment was sealed following the approval by the plenary session today.

Although parliament does not sit on Mondays, today’s session was agreed upon to enable MPs consider the nomination of the Chief Justice quickly.

Justice Akuffo, who has been at the apex court for over two decades, will take over from her ladyship Georgina Theodora Wood, who retired on June 8, 2017, after 10 years as Chief Justice and 47 years in public service.
